GEO-REFERENCED HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEM (GHIS)
The First Stage to a Coordinated Health Sector Response
In recent months, KECOFATUMA has, with modest support from GTZ carried out a project to map the proposed response of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) in fighting disease under the approved Global Fund Round 2 award. The disbursement of the award has been hampered by the long delay in drawing and approving of a work plan for implementation and limited M&E capacity nationally that have combined to make it harder to effectively assess and recommend CSO for funding with confidence.
In an attempt to assess the current position and available community resources for Global Fund, KECOFATUMA established a Geo-referenced Health Information System (GHIS).
The system is currently capable of outputting a wide range of indicators for organizations seeking to implement Global Fund supported projects as well as storing extensive information on its 500 member CSO and epidemiological, topographic and demographic data.
The system can map these indicators on a varying scale from a national level down to division specific focus.
KECOFATUMA is currently seeking to build partnerships to build the both volume and quality of the data on its current system and to link up with other systems for stronger interventions across the health sector and beyond.
KECOFATUMA has seen that effective GHIS mapping of Epidemiology, Demography, Current Response and Available Resources will allow effective identification of needs, gaps, progress and future strategies.
