Designing and Managing HIV and AIDS Programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa:  An International Capacity Building Workshop

Speke Hotel Munyonyo Kampala, Uganda 06-15 July 2009

Duration: 10 Days

1.       Summary

The HIV & AIDS epidemic continues to spread, with the majority of infections occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa.  While prevention of HIV infection remains the most important approach to the control of the epidemic, care and support for the infected and affected is becoming crucial.  Therefore, HIV & AIDS programme managers require practical strategic management skills for developing effective interventions to address HIV & AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support issues. 

2.       Target Participants

This workshop is targeted at 40 participants drawn from INGOs, NGOs, Governmental and Civil Society Organizations working especially in various parts of Africa. If is designed for potential and current Programme Managers in the field of HIV and AIDS in various sectors. However, other interested people can also attend especially social science and community development students who aspire to work with civil societies in the fight against HIV &AIDS.

3.       What you will get out of this Course

At the end of this course, participants will learn to:

o       Manage programmes and people in the context of HIV/AIDS

o       Develop skills to design, implement and manage community based HIV & AIDS programmes.

o       Analyze trends, contributory factors and impact of HIV & AIDS

o       Apply innovative behavior change communication approaches in HIV and AIDS interventions.

o       Develop targeted HIV & AIDS interventions implementing PH programmes

o       Use strategic programme management skills to enhance the effectiveness of HIV & AIDS interventions

4.       Course Content

-    HIV&AIDS Contextual and Impact analysis on communities affected and infected.

-    Analysis of the current responses to the impact of HIV and AIDS by represented organizations: - achievements, common approaches, gaps and opportunities.

-    HIV&AIDS Vulnerability analysis in Sub-Saharan Africa among communities. 

-    Scientific and experiential facts basic  facts of HIV and AIDS

-    Exploring our understanding of concepts: Defining designing and managing of HIV and AIDS programmes and Project cycle

-    Situation analysis for HIV and AIDS programmes.

-    Tools for designing of HIV and AIDS programmes (Time-line and project matrix, LFA,

-    Resource Mobilization for HIV and AIDS programmes.

-    Creating a supportive environment for designing and managing HIV and AIDS  programmes.

-    Management of HIV and AIDS programmes: Results Based Management

-    Management of HIV and AIDS programmes:

·        Organizational development and institutional capacity Building approaches

·        Leadership, Governance and management for change 

·        Community -Based HIV&AIDS management systems

·        Community -Based HIV&AIDS Monitoring and Evaluation systems

-    Designing and implementation of  selected HIV and AIDS interventions:

·        Workplace programmes.

·        WASH programmes

·        Livelihoods programmes

-    Facilitation skills  

-    Networking and partnership skills: Building strategic alliances in HIV and AIDS responses

-    Communication and counseling skills.

-    Documentation and reporting writing skills.

-    People management, team building and group dynamics

Course fees:

US$ 1,500. Course fees are exclusive of international travel, accommodation, dinners. A discounted rate is available for local participants, and organizations sending more than one participants
