HEADING     STOP TB and TB/HIV community activists elections
DATE     2009-05-22

Dear TB and TB/HIV community activists:

The Global Stop TB Partnership has asked Treatment Action Group to spear

head elections for community representatives who will serve on the core

groups of the Partnership's Working Groups (WG).  Along with nominees to

serve on the Partnership, this election also invites community activists

working on TB, TB/HIV, Multi-Drug Resistant TB and other related concerns to

participate in electing these community representatives by registering to

vote.

What is the Stop TB Partnership and its Working Groups?

Formed in 2000, the Stop TB Partnership (STBP), is a global network of

approximately 1000 organizations that work together to oversee the

development of policy, research, and programs to eliminate TB.

The STBP has 7 Working Groups (WG).  Each of the WG has a Core Group which

is its leadership and decision making body.  These WGs focus on different

areas of TB control- from TB/HIV co-infection, Multi-Drug Resistant  TB

(MDR-TB), to research on new drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines for TB. This

election is for community representatives (CR) who will serve on the Working

Group core groups.  In this position the CRs will have a chance to provide

leadership in the global fight against TB.

For full information about the Terms of Reference and how to self-nominate

for the community representative position as well as register to vote in the

elections please go to  <http://www.stoptb.org/webadmin/voting/>

Impact of TB and the importance of Community Representatives

TB, despite being curable, caused nearly 1.7 million deaths in 2007 and

continues to be a leading cause of death amongst People with HIV (PWH).

Community activism is a critical component to ensure that TB policies and

programs are reflecting community concerns.  Community representatives on

the Partnership WGs will have an opportunity to influence donors,

researchers, and governments to respond to TB with a much needed sense of

urgency.

Each of the WG has specific Terms of Reference and the number of community

representative seats that are vacant.  WGs also have sub groups that are

listed in the Basic Information document under each WG.  Please click on the

specific WG documents to get a full description of the expectations and

Terms of Reference for its core group community representatives.

All elected community representatives will be invited to participate in an

TB, TB/HIV advocacy workshop that will provide basic science, policy, and

research literacy on July 15-17 to assist them in fulfilling their role on

the Partnership more effectively.  Further details will be provided to

elected community representatives.

Note:  June 1, 09- Deadline for self-nomination to run for elections as well
as to register to vote.

Please read through the Background Information document as well as

information for voters and fill out the relevant documents to nominate

yourself for these positions as well as to register to vote.  Also feel free

to forward this information to other activists who might be strong

candidates for the Partnership WGs.

Looking forward to strengthening activist leadership in the response to TB.

Best

Javid Syed (TAG) and Young-Ae Chu (Stop TB Partnership)
